Out and around Berlin
Everyday Berlin has something to offer. But if you are not sure what to choose or just don’t feel like going to the party, you should consider spending some time out of Berlin. There are many options and the choice of the place depends on your personal interests and time available. You can think of something closer to Berlin like Potsdam or spend several hours on the train and find yourself in mysterious Freiburg. Just remember, wherever you go, keep your eyes open.
I decided to go to Potsdam. It took me 40 minutes of S-Bahn ride to get to a nice and cozy city with a great history, former residency of Wilhelm the Great and a stunning Palace of Sanssouci, filled with authenticity.
Potsdam can be a perfect spot for thoughtful walking and spending some time with yourself. Renting a bike would be a great idea, as the city is very compact. Take a coffee in one of the small coffee places and enjoy the view of the old catholic church. Then continue discovering the city moving closer to the Sanssouci Park. The park together with some other places was awarded UNESCO World Heritage status. You might want to stop near one of the benches in the park. I would call it an old fashion phone. You speak to a one corner and you can be heard on the opposite one. It’s all about the spread of the sound and it is exciting.
Potsdam is also known for being the birthplace of European film production. Babelsberg is the biggest and the oldest film studio, where more than 3 000 productions have been made, such as “Metropolis” and “The Blue Angel”. Now the film studio is open for visitors.
Potsdam is situated on the river Havel and has plenty of waterways. Exploring Potsdam from the water is even more interesting. Among many bridges, connecting parts of Potsdam, I would outline the Glienicke Bridge. It connects Potsdam to Berlin and it is the place where East and West exchanged secret agent and spies before 1980.
If you have more time and energy you can go further and explore Branderburg, which is 18 minutes away from Potsdam. Another option might be going to Oranienburg, situated on the north of Berlin. Choose the place, take a backpack and stay curious.
