The job that brought me here
My Berliner adventure started in February 2016. I am originally from Mexico, but I studied high school in New York therefore I graduated from an American school. I honestly did not know what to do with my life, since I was unsure of what I wanted to study in university. I decided then to take some time for myself and explore my options. Berlin was never in my mind since, as you can imagine, it was too far away from home. Fortunately, I heard about a really cool program called Au Pair and decided to start my process in order to get a job as a babysitter in a foreign country. Even though I had a couple of countries as an option, I opted for Germany, because I took two years of German, when I was in high school so I thought I had the basics to cover the requirement for the job. However, it turned out that I actually did not pay much attention and could not understand much of German. So my first step to take was to find a German course in the city where I lived in Mexico, which was almost impossible, since it is not a big city and German seems to be something ‘unreachable’ for Mexicans some times. However, I needed to go somewhere faraway in order to find myself and actually understand what I wanted to do with my life and this job was the perfect opportunity for it. I did not give up and found a German teacher that gave me private lessons for a couple of weeks so I could have my interview at the German embassy and get my visa. I was completely terrified to fly all the way to Berlin, having to live with another family I did not know completely, having to work with children who will speak mostly German, and being basically alone (or so far away from what I had). However, the adventure was going to help me and my main goal was to be able to learn German really well (or as good as possible). As part of my job program, I needed to attend a German course, so I needed to ‘force’ myself to do it and discover what the language had for me.
Do you want to learn German successfully?
