Family and friend visits – The cycle tour

Now that you have settled in, got some fresh German lessons at Kapitel Zwei, and already been all around the City, your family and friends want to visit you. Classic. “What to do with them?” is the next question. Of course, there are a thousand things to do: Alexanderplatz, Brandenburg tor, etc. are some you already know. However, here are a few of the best things, I would do for when friends or family visit.

First, cycling: You probably have your own bike now, but will need one for your family and friends. Berlin is flat, and full great little nooks and crannies to explore. So rent a bike! The usual price in the Späti is 10€ per day. It’s quite a lot, but there is a shop specializing in low cost bike rental Go to “Rent a bike in Neukölln”. They rent cool bikes out for 4€ a day!

Then explore the city. I like to take my friends to the more alternative areas, so once we have grabbed our bikes, we go directly to the Arena Berlin area, Eichenstraße, and park up. We walk around the old industrial buildings, each restored into clubs, bars, restaurants and flea markets. Enjoy the spree border with a beer, where you can see some of the old parts of the wall with a great view over the river.

It’s Berlin, so do not hesitate to check out all the little places. I got the chance, by knocking on a door, to see the preparation set for “Tatort”, the legendary German series. They let us in and let us have a look around.
After spending some chill time here, I like to visit the famous RAW area on the other part of the Spree. It’s a similar vibe to Eichenstraße but the perfect place to have a beer or two and walk around soaking up that old industrial architecture!

Then we follow the spree, and check out Holzmarkt and Yaam, two cultural places and event spaces with a beach, bar, music and deck chairs to help you make the most of the nice weather. Yes, we usually have some beers here, too.

Nearby, you can go by bike to the Karl-Marx-Allee and Frankfurter Allee, two large avenues, which are great to tour by bike and lead you directly to Alexanderplatz.

To finish, we go to Tempelhofer Feld. The abandoned airport turned into a gigantic park. Here too, the bike experience is really cool. There are different places to see here, just cycle around. To finish your day, what’s better than a barbecue and sunset over the airport? Just don’t forget to do it in the designated area!

Extra: Another very nice thing to do when you have visitors, is to spend a day at Teufelsberg, with or without bike!
