The German way of life

Kapitel Zwei Berlin reichstag

One of the things I am learning about every single day while being here is the German way of life. Since the first day I got here, I experienced a great amount of how the German people interact with one another, their food, the attitude of German people, how children are raised etc.

I was fortunate enough to have a roommate who is a very nice old lady named Mara. She is from Berlin and has lived here her entire life, but has also lived in Chile where she learned Spanish. We speak in German to each other as well as watch German films one of my favorites being „Oh Boy“ which was filmed here in Berlin! She always has time to talk and she would tell me everything about what life is like here.

It’s incredible how different life is here compared to the United States, one of the things I appreciated was that many jobs here really respect social and family time. Sundays typically you spend at home with your family to have dinner or just spend time together this shows that this country cares about family values. Also, people and children here are more appreciative of things here. It’s not all about materialistic. You are happy with what you have and enjoy more important things in life. I also noticed how educated people are here the average person speaks at least 3 languages and have traveled to many places.

I also am experiencing my very first serious winter here the temperature can get up to -3°C, but the body learns to adapt to these conditions. This is something I am learning to handle rather than mope about it, which is good because there’s no other winter like here in Germany.

These are just some of the things that I have noticed and a big part of it is that Germany is such a huge country, not just by size, but by discipline. The German people are very advanced in education and economically they do everything in a serious and professional matter. I will continue to learn every day about the German way of life, because there is still much to learn and I am looking forward to my future here in Berlin and will continue to practice my German.

Do you want to learn German successfully?
