What is the TestDaF?

TestDaF stands for the Test – Deutsch als Fremdsprache (German as a foreign language). The TestDaF is a standardized exam that is conducted externally by the TestDaF Institute. This takes place at hundreds of TestDaF centers around the world on the same day – including at Kapitel Zwei Berlin. The standard and quality of the exam are reviewed periodically.

Recognition of the language certificate TestDaF

The TestDaF is a nationally recognized language certification for the admission to higher education as well as an internationally recognized language certification for the sciences and academic professions. It covers all proficiency levels of the Common European Framework of Reference of Languages (CEFR) from B2 to C1+.

The TestDaF authorizes you to enroll in studies in Berlin and all of Germany as a foreign student applicant. It is comparable to the IELTS (International English Language Testing System) and the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language).

There are five areas of application for the TestDaF certificate:

You acquired your university qualification at a foreign school and would like to begin studying in Germany.

You already started your studies abroad and would like to continue your studies in Berlin or Germany.

You need to certify your German skills in your home country.

You are taking part in an exchange program and need to certify your German skills.

You need a certification of your German skills for a scientific job that you would like to pursue.

Once you have passed all four exam parts of the TestDaF with the proficiency level 4, your “report card” counts as a language certificate needed for admission to nearly all subjects and degrees at German colleges and universities.

The TestDaF is suited for you if you have already obtained advanced proficiency in German. We therefore recommend to have completed the B2.2 level as a minimum, in order to take part in our preparation course for the TestDaF in Berlin.

What does TestDaF – level 4 mean?

The exam assesses the B2 / C1 level by means of internal differentiation. However, TDN4 is required for access to higher education. TDN4 is short for TestDaF-proficiency level (= Niveaustufe).

The preparation course in Berlin was designed to be appropriately demanding. You can review the description of proficiency level 4 in the following:

Reading comprehension

TDN 4 You understand written text, its details and context. These texts are taken from university-related daily life or interdisciplinary scientific fields.

Listening comprehension

TDN 4 You understand spoken text, its details and context. These texts are taken from university-related daily life or interdisciplinary scientific fields.

Written expression

TDN 4 You can express yourself in writing regarding university-related daily life as well as interdisciplinary scientific fields in a largely coherent, structured and appropriate manner; possible linguistic deficiencies do not affect your comprehension of text.

Topics include reports for your scholarship provider, protocols, theses, etc.

Verbal expression

TDN 4 You can express yourself verbally regarding university-related daily life as well as interdisciplinary scientific fields largely according to the situation; possible linguistic deficiencies do not affect your communication.

Everyday situations include your enrollment, registering for seminars/classes, social-political discussions, etc.

Taking the oral exam at a computer takes a bit getting used to, i.e. you will need to talk to a computer. Hence your interlocutor will not be a university teacher from your field of study.

On the other hand, you can breathe a sigh of relief as there is no explicit grammar part.

Contents of the intensive preparation course TestDaF in Berlin

The preparation course for the TestDaF in Berlin is meant to help you successfully pass the test and thus enable you to study at a German university.

1) You will get to know the format of the TestDaF in the first week under guidance. That means that you will learn details about the scope, setup and concept of the content. The TestDaF especially checks whether you properly receive (reading and listening) texts written in a scientific language, in order to be able to attend seminars and courses at universities in Germany. Hence your communicative skills are more important than an exact repetition of grammar rules or structures, for example. A lot of topics revolve around studies and everyday university and student life in Germany.

2) In the following weeks of your preparation course for the TestDaF in Berlin you will develop your proficiency in four areas: reading and listening comprehension, written and verbal expression. Training your written expression as the core of the exam is paramount here. We pointedly practice writing scientifically, argumentation and discussions on a university level.

3) Furthermore, we intensively train your verbal expression with seven different tasks. These include hypotheses, assumptions and forecasts, providing advice or obtaining information over the phone. Our collection of verbal expressions supports you in this matter.

4) Further special attention is given to the description of graphics. To do so, we utilize a specially designed and optimized program to get the most out of your linguistic skills. We can also flexibly react to requests by individual participants as part of the preparation course for the TestDaF.

5) The grammar spectrum especially covers nominalization, subject-verb combinations, genitive prepositions and sentence conjunctions or prepositional groups, subjunctive I, passive forms and adjectives of participles. In addition, we will continuously expand your vocabulary by practicing with texts.

At the end of the intensive preparation course for the TestDaF in Berlin you will have acquired the right strategy to master the exam.

We will discuss all five sample exams available including the listening skills in detail and note the answer formulations for task 3.

Intensity of your preparation course TestDaF in Berlin

We will intensively prepare you for the TestDaF 12 hours per week across four weeks. This preparation course takes place Monday to Thursday for 3 hours per day (i.e. 4 instruction units per day). At the end of this intensive course, you will thus have completed a total of 64 instruction units.

Our teacher has taught the intensive preparation course for TestDaF in Berlin for what feels like a thousand times and is thus an absolute pro in this field. He teaches all language levels with a specialization on higher education admission tests. In the past, he also offered literacy courses.

He completed his DaF studies in Freiburg as well as his Magister in Philology of German as a Foreign Language and slavistics. He is raising his children bilingually and they are just as likeable as their father.

He spends his free time travelling in the Caucasus, Iran, the Balkans, Eastern Europe, Morocco and the Iberian Peninsula. He also walks his ball-of-wool dog in Berlin’s different parks.
