Candice Breitz, Love Story (2016) in Berlin
Featuring Alec Baldwin and Julianne Moore
On Wednesday, 28th June, your language school Kapitel Zwei Berlin wants to take you to the free exhibition „Love Story“ (featuring Alec Baldwin and Julianne Moore), which presents seven video installations. But, “dear me”, don’t be deterred, appearance is deceiving! The exhibition is not about cheesy Hollywood love stories, it is rather about the topic of sympathy in regard to the refugee crisis and politics, which often falls on deaf ears.
Two popular faces await you in the gallery KOW in Berlin-Mitte. Alec Baldwin and Julianne Moore – both Hollywood-actors, you might have encountered in several cinema films. But for the mentioned topic of the exhibition, they play quite unusual roles: for the video installation “Love Story” by Candice Breitz – a South-African photo and media artist, who has been living in Berlin for several years now.
Julian Moore takes on the role of a mother, among many other roles, who got, together with her children, brutally attacked in Congo, Alex Baldwin plays the role a child soldier in Angola, then again Julianne Moore portrays a woman, who needs to flee from Syria, and gives a feeling for how hard that situation is for women. Further roles and stories await you on Wednesday.
Initially you might wonder, why especially those two celebrities take on these roles without customs or props, and why they present such tragic stories. You might even find it disturbing and feel only a commercial side. But many visitors noticed, that they have, because of the famous persons telling the stories, truly listened to the stories:
Whenever refugees talk about their experiences, several people are not really interested in them. Do you think that is not true? Let us venture to the lowest floor of the exhibition, on which the refugees rise to speak. Does it move you in any way? How grotesque do you find the desired contrast of the told stories between the famous faces of the Hollywood actors and the unknown faces of the refugees – like you and me? How attentive are you, while actors tell you a refugees’ story in perfectly spoken English, pleasant and appealing, or a refugee speaks about his or her life in broken English, tiring, confusing, and slow? Who is going to move you more?
