Berlin 1937 – The shadow of tomorrow
Excursion with your German language school to the Märkische Museum
Also this month, we will educate ourselves further. On Wednesday, the 20th December, we’ll go to the special exhibition at the Märkische Museum „The shadow of tomorrow“. The exhibition analyses, in an intensive and critical way, the everyday reality in Berlin, and the conditions under Hitler’s dictatorship – the focus lies in the pre-war period.
But why 1937? In 1937 an exhibition was opened in the Berliner exhibition hall, which was called „Gebt mir vier Jahre Zeit“ (“give me 4 years“), relating to Hitler’s words from 1933. This exhibition has already illustrated the Nazi influence on Germany and Berlin at that time.
A few months afterwards, Berlin has even celebrated its 700th city anniversary.
Because the modern exhibition visitor needs a bit of entertainment, despite the serious subject, we can find more than 50 objects, which make history talk:
- What do the radio stations names tell us about the personality cult around Hitler?
- How can a butter dish become part of war preparations?
- What do the bust of Horst Wessel, a SA member, and the sculpture of a concentration camp memorial have in common?
- What does a Coca-Cola bottle tell us about antisemitism, and how can it connect Berlin’s anniversary at that time with the Nuremberg Rally?
These artefacts retrieve their and our history. In the exhibition of 2017, you’ll clearly see, which kind of Berlin the citizens lived in during the 1930’s. You’ll learn how the lives of each person had already been affected in the pre-war period, and which consequences that meant for everyone. You’ll find an answer to the question, whether the criminal character of the National Socialists could have been felt before World War 2 and the Holocaust.
