Exhibition: Milestones – Setbacks – Sidetracks : History of the German parliament

On tour with Kapitel Zwei – Your German language school

On Wednesday, January 31st, we will go “The German Bundestag’s exhibition on parliamentary history entitled “Milestones – Setbacks – Sidetracks” in the Deutscher Dom on Gendarmenmarkt.

There are only 87 free democracies worldwide (as of 2016). Germany is one of them. But it hasn’t always been like that. How was it possible for Germany to develop (luckily) to the democracy of the present state; having overcome the Great War and World War II, the National Socialism, the economic crises, and having entered the era of globalisation? What is to expect from the future? This exhibition displays the history of the German Parliament and the evolution of democracy after national socialism, over 5 floors.

The following eras are displayed in the exhibition:

  • Level 1: Early German parliamentarism and the revolution of 1848/49
  • Level 1.1: Parliamentary democracy in Germany
  • Level 2: Parliamentarism in imperial Germany and in the Weimar Republic
  • Level 3: The National Socialist state and sham parliamentarism in the GDR
  • Level 4: Cinema, pupils’ project room
  • Level 5: Parliamentary architecture in Germany
  • Tower level 5: Special exhibition “The Deutscher Dom – A building in constant change”

Free guided tour:

Where do you want to go? We could also take part in a 30 minutes guided tour about one of your favoured topics from that exhibition. Tours will be primarily in German. On request, we could also get into an English guided tour. Are you interested?

Deutscher Dom in Berlin:

The exhibition is located in a very special place, it is the Deutscher Dom (German Cathedral) at the Gendarmenmarkt, opposite of the Französischer Dom (French Cathedral). The Piazza del Popolo in Rome served as a model for the two symmetrical dome towers (diameter of 13m). Whereas the design is inspired by the Panthéon in Paris.

In 1943 the Deutscher Dom was almost completely destroyed in the bombing of Berlin and was subsequently rebuilt until 1996. In the same year it was re-opened.

We can look forward to a very special exhibition, which has already welcomed about a million visitors. Take part together with your language school Kapitel Zwei!
